Sanford Johnson honored with Clinton School Distinguished Alumni Award

The Clinton School of Public Service presented Sanford Johnson (’09) with its Distinguished Alumni Award on Oct. 23 during the school’s Alumni Weekend celebration.

Johnson, a member of the Clinton School’s third class and Executive Director of Teach Plus Arkansas-Mississippi, was recognized for his transformative work in education policy, his leadership across the Delta region, and his lifelong commitment to amplifying teacher voices.

“It is really exciting to think about. It’s been almost 20 years since my very first time on campus,” Johnson said. “I loved my Clinton School experience, and to be recognized by my alma mater is truly an honor. I am beyond grateful.” A native of Starkville, Mississippi, and resident of Clarksdale, Johnson began his career as a middle and high school social studies teacher in the Arkansas and Mississippi Delta. While completing his Master of Public Service degree at the Clinton School, Johnson co-founded Mississippi First, an education policy nonprofit, leading him to serve as the organization’s Deputy Director for a decade. In fact, Johnson and his team received news of their founding grant while he was completing his International Public Service Project in South Africa.

In 2020, Johnson joined Teach Plus to launch the Mississippi Policy Fellowship, later expanding his work to launch Teach Plus Arkansas in 2021. Under his leadership, the two state initiatives were merged into Team ArkMiss last year. As regional executive director, Johnson drives targeted efforts across both states to address chronic absenteeism, expand the utilization of student success plans, and develop longitudinal data systems that track high school transitions into college and career readiness.

“Sanford embodies the core mission of the Clinton School in everything he does,” Dean Victoria DeFrancesco Soto said. “From his pioneering work in education policy to his deep commitment to communities across the Delta, Sanford has consistently used his public service degree to drive impactful projects. We are immensely proud to honor him as our Distinguished Alumnus.” Throughout his career, Johnson has championed elevating classroom teachers directly into policy discussions, guiding educator leaders as they influenced state funding formulas, teacher compensation, and licensure requirements.

“Legislators, parents, and community members trust great teachers,” Johnson explained. “Few people know as well as teachers what policy looks like inside the classroom. With the right training, they become remarkably effective policy advocates because they don’t just point out problems, but present concrete solutions as well.” Reflecting on his time at the Clinton School, Johnson highlighted how foundational practical skills, like designing structured workplans and building deep community trust, continue to guide his daily work.

“One of the core mindsets I took from Little Rock was the importance of relationship building,” Johnson noted. “Whether we were working in Marvell, Arkansas, or with partners in Cape Town, building genuine relationships and trust is essential if you are going to drive change in communities.” In addition to leading Team ArkMiss, Johnson serves on the Clinton School Dean’s Advisory Board, where he works to support current students, mentor those interested in Delta-based public service, and share perspectives from the school’s earliest years.

Active in civic leadership, Johnson serves on the boards of Teen Health Mississippi and the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi, and is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the Clarksdale Rotary Club.

Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University alongside his Master of Public Service from the Clinton School. He resides in Clarksdale with his wife, Amanda, and their two daughters, Lorelei and Ava. v Angie Faller is director of marketing and communications at the Clinton School of Public Service.
